About the price...

I initially placed a price on my coffee that was so low that I could not possibly have produced it without donating a significant amount of my time and money (I already volunteer a good chunk of my time and wealth here). After reevaluating what goes into producing each ounce of ground coffee I have come to a price of $1.17/ounce.

First, one of the things I did not account for was that coffee automatically loses 20% of its weight when it is roasted. This means that when I pay a dollar for green beans I automatically lose $.20 on the dollar.

Next, I priced my labor to produce each 16 ounces of roasted coffee at just $4.00 per pound. I fully expected that I could roast and package 2lbs. per hour. unfortunately that is mass production thinking and I am a small-batch producer. Add that with the automatic 20% loss and there is a significant portion of the increase.

Finally, I did not factor in the need for packaging and labeling into the mix so after these items have been accounted for we now have $1.17/per roasted ounce of coffee instead of the original $0.875/per roasted ounce. So, yes, I really did mess up the original quote by 25% and I am sorry.

Is There an Up-Side?

I think so. When you make my coffee in your brewing system, it costs you just $0.049/per liquid ounce of coffee. So in comparison it is still more than 60% less expensive than driving through one of the large name coffee makers' stores and getting a cup of their brew. And my coffee is fresh roasted with no flavor additives to make it taste the same each day. I pride myself in assuring you that every cup will be a new experience in flavor because not every small batch of hand roasted coffee should taste the same - there are just too many variables.

I bought a cup of Starbucks the other day. It turns out the price for each ounce of liquid was about $.15.
I bought a cup of Tim Hortens the other day. It was about $.14 per liquid ounce.
The Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is $48.00 per pound - that's $.125 per liquid ounce.
